In 1905 at King's Lynn, Vaughan Williams noted a number of Norfolk folk tunes (later published in the Journal of the Folk Song Society). On the best of these he then based three Norfolk Rhapsodies for orchestra, the first of which was performed at a Queen's Hall Prom in 1906. After a slow introduction in the rhythm of "The Basket of Eggs", the Rhapsody introduces "The Captain's Apprentice" (viola solo), "A Bold Young Sailor" (cor anglais), "Ward the Pirate" (brass), and "On Board a 93" (strings).
