James Pearson and his two children, Jane and Rob, are on their way to Gabriel's Gully, the new and fantastically rich gold-field which has been discovered by Gabriel Read. With them are Sam Jolly (Pearson's partner) and Martha, the mysterious Australian girl who, with her baby, was walking to the Lindis Pass diggings in search of her husband when they met her.
