Verdi's Requiem was first performed 100 years ago today, on 22 Mav 1874. This work, which began life as a tribute to Rossini and materialised as a memorial to Alessandro Manzoni. made such an impact that extra performances had to be arranged to satisfy public demand. Today the Requiem has lost none of its emotional power and remains one of the great achievements in the history of Italian music.
