Tides cannot be predicted theoretically. Tide tables are constructed from the analyses of past observations, but at any time the expected tides may be altered by the weather. In this talk J. R. Rossiter describes the tidal surge that caused the disastrous floods in East Anglia and Holland in February 1953.
