celebrates today's 50th anniversary of Sir John Gielgud's first appearance on the English stage.
During the summer, when John Gielgud was appearing at the Chichester Festival Theatre in Bernard Shaw's "Caesar and Cleopatra", Patrick Garland talked to him, in a garden in the Cathedral Close, about the recurring themes in his acting life - especially the Roman plays, Chekhov, Richard II and Hamlet.
His changeover during the 1960s from the romantic hero in period costume to the contemporary anti-hero is illustrated by excerpts from "The Charge of the Light Brigade", 240 Years On", "Home".
