When Mike Robinson 's unemployment payments are stopped because he turns up drunk for a job interview, he decides that the time has come for him to leave his room - and unpaid bills - behind. He cons his gullible friend Charlie into driving him to Santa Barbara before his car is repossessed. As the couple head north their adventures begin. But gradually Charlie realises that his companion's instability is increasingly dangerous....
