AMERICA Roots of Cane

on BBC Radio 3

Jean Toomer was just a mixed-up American intellectual until a chance trip to Georgia in the early 1920s awakened in him the black part of his identity and produced a southern masterpiece, Cane. In this programme compiled by David Perry , Hugh Quarshie reads from the book and from Toomer's letters and diary, with comment from the writer Toni Morrison on the man and his work.
