Dvorak's Symphony No. 4, in G, was completed in 1889 and dedicated 'to the Bohemian Academy of Emperor Franz Joseph for the Encouragement of Art and Literature, in thanks for my election '. It is one of the Czech master's loveliest and most idyllic works. Like many of his later compositions, it is simpler and more light-hearted than those of his middle period, which are often akin to Brahms both technically and in their seriousness of mood.
