Ewen Cameron and his brother-in-law, Hector Grant , are imprisoned at Fort William. They are suspected of sheltering Dr. Archibald Cameron , a Jacobite agent wanted by the Government. At last Ewen has yielded to Hector's repeated persuasions that they should attempt to escape.
