Horizon

on BBC One London

West of Bangalore
The villagers of Pura spend one and a half hours each day fetching their drinking water, two and a half gathering firewood, and another six hours finding food for their livestock. Pura is typical of the 600,000 villages in which most of India's vast population does its best to survive.
Professor Amulya Reddy , disturbed by the failure of science and technology to make any impact on village India, took a team of scientists to Pura some years ago to see if their knowledge and training could help the villagers improve their way of life. Starting from zero, the scientists found they had to ' unlearn' many attitudes and much of their expertise. Only now are they edging towards solutions for Pura's basic problems of housing, water supply, lighting and most critical of all-cooking fuel.
