A portrait of Sir Hamilton Harty
The fifth of six programmes about great British conductors, compiled and written by BRYAN CRIMP
Narrated by John Rowe
Sir Hamilton Harty was an exact contemporary of Sir Thomas Beecham and in the opinion of many no less distinguished as a musician. But today he is largely forgotten and his few recordings are mostly on worn 78s. He was an ardent champion of Berlioz and it was Harty who conducted the premiere performances of Walton's First Symphony.
