The Swedish Nightingale

on BBC Radio 4 FM

Ingrid Bergman reads from the letters of Jenny Lind in this account of the life of one of the world's great singers.
Jenny Lind made her first London appearance in 1847 and became, after Queen Victoria, the most famous and best loved woman in England. Even among those who never heard her sing she was a household name.
JOAN SUTHERLAND , on gramophone records, sings extracts from the operas in which the Swedish singer was heard during her brief and brilliant career, including La Sonnambula, Norma and The Daughter of the Regiment.
