3: Chance, 1960-70. "Those few minutes were to change my life decisively. While listening to it, I suddenly realized that I could compose music differently from that of my past." A radio broadcast of a work by the American composer John Cage in 1960 provided Lutoslawski with the catalyst for a change in direction in his music. Donald Macleod looks at those works of the 1960s that experiment with chance procedures.
