This event was first staged in 1986 in Athens and has produced a string of great champions in the sport.
Britain has produced four world junior champions. In 1986, there was Colin Jackson (110m hurdles) and David Sharpe (800m). In 1988, there was Fiona May (long jump), and two years ago Diane Smith (200m). Also a chance to see the junior Great North Run from the north-east.
