Catherine Moriand, escorted to Bath by Mr. and Mrs. Allen, conceives a deep admiration for Henry Tilney. Mrs. Allen encounters an old schoolfellow, Mrs. Thorpe, who introduces her family, and Catherine forms a violent friendship with Isabella Thorpe. It is clear to everyone but Catherine that her brother James is enamoured of Isabella. John Thorpe, a vulgar, horsey young man, makes advances to Catherine, believing her to be Mr. Allen's heiress, a fact which he boastfully communicates to General Tilney, Henry's father, who has arrived in Bath with his daughter Eleanor
