Catherine Moriand, escorted to Bath by Mr. and Mrs. Allen, conceives a deep admiration for Henry Tilney. Mrs. Allen encounters an old schoolfellow, Mrs. Thorpe, who introduces her family, and Catherine forms a violent friendship with Isabella Thorpe. It is clear to everyone but Catherine that her brother James is enamoured of Isabella.
