Sunday Feature: Another Country

on BBC Radio 3

A series of four personal journeys.
2: Half a World Away. Award-winning poet Owen Sheers grew up in Wales but was born in Fiji in 1974. In accordance with local tradition his umbilical cord was buried under the roots of a coconut tree, a practice which is said to guarantee the person's return to the land of their birth. As he travels through Fiji's lush interior and coral-fringed coast, he finds himself following in the footsteps of another young poet who fell in love with the islands, Rupert Brooke.
