A gramophone record of a twelfth-century music drama
The New York Pro Musica
Directed by Noah Greenberg
Presented by Denis Stevens
PART 1
Part 2: tomorrow at 10.30
The original manuscript of the music for this play is in the British Museum and was transcribed for this performance by Fr. Rembert Weakland , O.S.B., and scored for voices and instruments by Noah Greenberg. The music has a pulse, a rhythmic vitality that lends to basically straightforward tunes an air of freshness and fascination; it shows us that the Middle Ages, far from being dark, were light enough to create what is virtually light music, even though its subject is the story of Daniel in the Lion's Den and the final judgment on his persecutors.
