Dr. and Mrs. Dale found it impossible to refuse to take Mrs. Mountford to France in their car, particularly in view of Miss Marchbanks's obvious excitement about her own holiday plans in Mrs. Mountford's absence. David tried unsuccessful to persuade Clifford Pugh to postpone his marriage to Jenny. Tiggy and Jan surprised a burglar in the Fieldings' house. Having at last got Mrs. Dale to agree to having her bedroom decorated while she was on holiday, Mrs. Morgan was furious when Maggs said he was too busy with Mrs. Vyner's shop to do it then; Mrs. Dale was secretly relieved.
