The Bernhard Baron Cottage Homes were opened in 1945 by a Committee of the Society of Friends (Quakers) to provide a permanent home for old people who were living in wartime evacuation hostels and who had no home of their own to return to when the war ended. The Homes, named in recognition of the generosity of the Bernhard Baron Trust, are administered by the Society of Friends under a trust deed, which stipulates that no preference shall be given to applicants on religious or political grounds.
New buildings are being constructed to replace the present inadequate sick bay, kitchen, dining-room, and staff accommodation, and to provide for additional residents. £ 9,000 is still needed towards the cost of £ 35,000 for this development.
