Heralded by Beethoven's stirring overture, Shostakovich's dramatically pro-Soviet Third Symphony comes to the Proms for the first time. There is drama, too, and consolation in a new symphonic fantasy by the Finnish composer Kalevi Aho and in the powerfully lyrical piano concerto by Brahms.
