A Century of Modern Theatre

on BBC Radio 4 FM

The Playboy of the Western World by j. M. SYNGE : adapted for radio by w. R. RODGERS with Sorcha Cusack
Declan Harvey , Godfrey Quigley Olive McFarland
' Then 1 turned around with my back to the north, and I hit a blow on the ridge of his skull, laid stretched out, and he split to the knob of his gullet.' So young Christy Mahon describes the deed of killing his father to wide-eyed country girls in County Mayo. This is Synge's great ' dark comedy,' first produced at the Abbey Theatre, Dublin, in 1907, where audiences rioted for a week against his attack on Celtic sentimentality.
Other vitlagers REX HOLDSWORTH MOLLIE PETRIE , HUBERT TUCKER
Producer BRIAN MILLER (Bristol)
