Since the French 'New Wave' broke at the Cannes Film Festival of 1959, many countries have produced new waves of their own, each of which has made a contribution to world cinema. John Baxter examines this recurring phenomenon with the help of the film directors Stanley Kramer, Louis Malle, Lindsay Anderson, Milos Forman, John Carpenter, Gil Brealey and Jeanne Moreau.
