Prince Andrew has proposed to Natasha Rostov, and been accepted. But Prince Andrew's old father, Prince Bolkonsky, refuses to consent to the marriage unless Prince Andrew postpones it for a year and goes abroad. Natasha does not find the long waiting easy, and does not look forward to meeting her 'in-laws', the stern old Prince Bolkonsky and his daughter Marya.
