A Flower in the Darkness

on BBC Radio 4 FM

At some time during the 4th or 5th century, Christ. ianity came to Ireland. While Barbarians swept over Europe, and the Roman Empire collapsed, the monasteries of Ireland intertwined Christ-ianity with classical and native law, and fused them into a culture that was to blossom across Europe. This programme on the eve of St Pat rick's Day looks at the monasteries and men that made Ireland a flower of learning in the darkness of Europe.
