Composer of the Week: Holst

on BBC Radio 3

2/5. Donald Macleod investigates two very different influences on Holst's music - Henry Purcell and Hindu mythology - and introduces his choral and orchestral piece The Cloud Messenger, which is based on Sanskrit poetry. Hoist was a trombonist, and he wrote some of the first significant works for wind band. His First Suite, of 1909, begins, Purcell-like, with a chaconne. Suite No 1, Op 28 No 1
The Central Band of the Royal Air Force, conductor Wg Cdr Eric Banks The Cloud Messenger Op 30
