Joan Boulter began her studies at the Royal Academy in 1927; she won the Potter Exhibition, the Edward W. Nicholls Prize, the Antonia D. Murdoch Prize, the Marguerite Elzy Withers Memorial Prize for trio playing, the Cuthbert Whitmore Memorial Prize, the Leonard Borwick Prize, the Sterndale Bennett Prize, the Alexander Roller Prize, the Macfarren Gold Medal, the Albanesi Silver Medal and the Challen Gold Medal. She was appointed a Professor of the Academy in 1932.
