SOME SOURCES OF ROMANTICISM

on BBC Radio 3

Six Lectures by Sir Isaiah Berlin given at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, sponsored by the Bolligen Foundation
4: The Restrained Romantics
' The nature of things," said Rousseau once, " the nature of things does not lead to madness, only ill will does." This is probably true for the majority of mankind, but there were certain Germans in the eighteenth century of whom this is plainly false. They are maddened not only by the ill will of persons but by the nature of things.'
From among these Germans who could be regarded as restrained Romantics, Professor Berlin discusses Immanuel Kant , Friedrich Schiller , and Johann Fichte.
