Vincent Pobjoy's Violin Sonata was first performed by Jan Sedivka and Tom Bromley in 1951 at a concert of the Society for the Promotion of New Music. The songs by Philip Cannon are dedicated to Sophie Wyss and Marie Korchinska, who first performed them at a concert in London last year; their titles are: La mal mariee, L'amoureuse, La bien mariée, La veuve, and La bien aimée. Francis Baines' Summer Music was written in 1949; it is in three movements, played without a break. D.C.
