PRAGUE Beer

on BBC Radio 3

The Czech Republic has the highest beer consumption in Europe, and in Prague pubs open at breakfast time. And it's cheap - half the price of more recent imports like Coca-Cola. The Czech government has tried to protect the country's famous breweries, like the Budvar in Ceske Budejovice. from foreign buy-outs which might lead to the ultimate sacrilege of putting beer in cans instead of bottles.
Julian Duplain tours Prague beer cellars, speaks to the drinkers and tapsters, and enjoys the central Prague brewery where you can buy the freshly brewed product on the spot.
