Like many American composers of his generation Samuel Barberwas well aware that the new technology of radio would offer a far greater range of people the opportunity to hear his music. He was delighted when Toscanini elected to programme what's now one of his most popular pieces of music, the Adagio for Strings, and another short orchestral piece called Essay, in one of his weekly concert broadcasts on NBC radio.
