Michael Berkeley 's guest today is the British philanthropist Peter Moores. The son of the founder of the Littlewoods empire, he has been chairman and director of the family firm but is best known for his work in the cultural field. In 1964 he established the Peter Moores Foundation, which gives financial support to talented young musicians: among those who have benefitted are Joan Sutherland , Rosalind Plowright , Jane Eaglen , Amanda Roocroft and Simon Keenlyside. The Foundation also supports recordings of operas in English translation, the visual arts, and charitable causes in Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean. Not surprisingly, opera features large in Peter Moores 's personal musical passions.
