by JAMES JOYCE
Harold Pinter 's Mermaid Theatre production re-created for radio.
James Joyce , who was born in 1882, left Dublin with Nora Barnacle in 1904. They lived in Trieste until 1915. They had two children, a boy and a girl. Exiles was published in Paris in 1918, four years before Ulysses. Joyce did not see the play performed.
The play takes place at Merlion and Ranelagh, two suburbs of Dublin.
The play had a vibrant tension wholly suited to the closeness of radio as a medium and the performances of Vivien Merchant, John Wood , Timothy West and Lynn Farleigh seemed pitched perfectly to the appropriate atmosphere of emotional eavesdropping
