Franz Josef Strauss
Controversy, allegations and scandals have dominated the 30-year career of the German politician Franz Josef Strauss.
Dropped as Minister of Defence in 1962, he is now accused by his German critics of being intolerant and deceitful. But he is the Conservative candidate to be Germany's next Prime Minister.
Strauss insists he is the victim of an insidious international Communist campaign calculated to remove a determined opponent. If elected, Strauss promises to mobilise not only Germany, but all Western Europe with the strong leadership needed to face the Communist challenge. His critics. fear his leadership would endanger Germany and Europe.
