Giovanni Pacini 's opera, to a libretto by SALVATORE CAMMARANO , was universally judged to be his masterpiece at the time of its premiere in 1840 - and ever since. This performance, starring Montserrat
Caballe in the title role, was given at the 1989 Vienna Festival.
