Torpedo-boat destroyer, torpedo boat, gunboat, submarine hunter, convoy escort, maid of all work-the destroyers were at Jutland, at Dunkirk, in the Battle of the Atlantic, in the Pacific, off Crete and Malta, on the Russian convoy ' run '. Sometimes called ' frigate ' or ' corvette the destroyer has had many forms and many tasks; she remains the lynchpin for the Royal Navy's defence of the realm.
