The Lawn Tennis Championships
The opening day of the world's greatest tennis tournament direct from the All England Club featuring
The First Round of the Men's Singles Championship
This afternoon, for the fifth time as defending champion, Sweden's BJORN BORG again has the honour of opening play on the Centre Court. Who can end his historic run of success, which began in 1976 and now extends to 35 matches on the famous grass courts? Among his 127 rivals the most hopeful contenders will be US Open Champion, JOHN MCENROE -so close to dethroning Borg in last year's epic Final, former champion JIMMY CONNORS , the fast-serving ROSCOE TANNER , beaten finalist two years ago, and a clutch of improving young players including IVAN LENDL and YANNICK NOAH. The development plans at the home of tennis, which in the last two years have literally raised the Centre Court roof and introduced four new courts, now produce a new look for the Number One Court.
