Paul Sexton tells the rather sad tale of Northern Songs, the publishing company set up in 1963 by Dick James and Beatles manager Brian Epstein to publish the songs of Lennon and McCartney. In 1969 ATV bought the goldmine songbook, but without the knowledge of the songwriters. Wealthy entertainer Michael Jackson then purchased the package in the mid-80s. The programme gets the story from songwriters Tony Hatch and Graham Gouldman , lawyer Michael Eaton , author Brian Southall and Paul Russell , who worked with Jackson when he bought the catalogue.
