William Glock reviews the book by Paul Hindemith
In this century few people have done more than Hindemith in trying to restore to music its old foundations of knowledge, wisdom, and ethical power. In his recently published book ' A Composer's World ' he sets out from St. Augustine and Boethius and examines some of the fundamental problems of composer, performer, and listener. Hindemith believes that a revival of amateur playing and singing is essential if our musical life is to be healthy, and he suggests a more liberal and all-embracing education for composers.
