PIPE-MAJOR ROSS, born at Glenstarthfarrar in 1879, learned to play the pipes from his father and mother, both skilful players. In 1896 he enlisted in the Scots Guards ; took part in the South African War, for which he holds the Queen Victoria and Edward VI medals. In the Great War Pipe-Major Ross served with his battalion from the beginning until June, 1918, when invalided out of the service. He is now instructor in the school of army pipers, Edinburgh Castle. For four successive years Pipe-Major Ross held the title of Champion all-round Piper of Scotland, a record entitling him to the MacDonald shield ; seven times winner of the Championship Gold Clasp at Inverness ; eight times winner of the Lochaber Gold Medal with six clasps. He has published a book of tunes.
