Mr. A.R. Dawson

Treasure Ships! Doubloons! Pieces of eight! We never weary of hearing of the perils undertaken to intercept the Spanish galleons transferring the vast wealth of the New World to the Old. But in this talk Mr. A.R. Dawson tells a treasure story different from most. Away on a West Indian reef William Phipps actually found a Spanish galleon with untold treasure. Nor is this incident without local connection, for Phipps' father was a Bristol man who settled in the Plantations with savage Red Indians as neighbours in the surrounding woods. How William Phipps, the backwoods boy, emerged from there, found vast wealth, was knighted by the King and returned as Royal Governor of Massachusetts is an outstanding romance of the seventeenth century, little known except to students of the beginnings of the American Republic.
