Opera on 3: Live from the Met: Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk

on BBC Radio 3

Shostakovich's tale of adultery, murder and suicide was immediately popular with audiences, but a hostile article in the government newspaper Pravda caused the opera to be withdrawn, not to return to the stage for nearly 30 years.

Katerina is bored with her marriage, so she begins an affair with a workman, Sergei. Her father-in-law finds out, and Katerina decides that the best way to keep him quiet is to lace his mushrooms with rat poison.
