During the First World War the British Army complained of a shortage of artillery shells and blamed the drunkenness of cordite workers back home.
So the British government took over the pubs near the cordite works to stop excessive drinking. The principal area was around Carlisle where the state control lasted over 50 years. Eric Robson tells the story. Readers
