On the morning of 20 November 1953, French paratroops began to rain down on Dien Bien Phu - a cluster of tiny hamlets 200 miles from Hanoi. Soon 16,000 regular and colonial troops had created an ' impregnable ' fortress and were inviting the communist Vietminh Army to come out of hiding and fight.
