Havergal Brian's monumental choral symphony, completed in 1928, is mentioned in the Guinness Book of Records as the largest symphony, both for its length and for the massive forces required to perform it. Based (like Mahler's eighth symphony) on Goethe's Faust and a choral setting of the Te Deum, the Gothic was the first of 32 symphonies, most of them composed in isolation and obscurity. Paul Guinery is joined by composer John Pickard to introduce the only CD recording of this work.
