The Second Symphony Concert of the 39th Winter Series This Overture in E flat was composed in 1926. and is dedicated to Joseph Lewis, Musical Director, at that time of Birmingham B.B.C. Station-now at Broadcasting House. The work is on broad and dignified lines and is more or less classical as regards form, and is scored for full symphony orchestra.
The Overture bears the following inscription, and while the music is not intended to be in any sense descriptive, it may be said to follow somewhat the mood of these words:-
To have courage
An indomitable will in adversity; To be cheerful in times of sirens- Kindly disposed towards all men
With compassionate understanding of their difficulties -Of such stuff are Heroes made.
