Night Waves

on BBC Radio 3

The new Baltic Centre for
Contemporary Art is not due to open in Gateshead until 2001, but as demolition of the building's old interior comes to an end, the sculptor Anish Kupoor has been invited to take over this vast space. Richard Coles talks to him about the inspiration of emptiness. Plus a profile of mid-century photographer Edwin Smith. His documentary and landscape photographs may be scarcely known to the public at large, but professionals place him among the most influential British photographers of the century.
