Starring Gregory Peck, Susan Hayward, Ava Gardner
The first in this new season of outstanding feature films is adapted from the famous novel by Ernest Hemingway. Writer Harry Street (Gregory Peck) lies injured and dangerously ill in an African hunting camp. Attended by his wife (Susan Hayward), he begins to review his life-the search for love and adventure that have brought him to the hot plains beneath the mountain of Kilimanjaro.
Like many of his stories, Kilimanjaro suggests parallels with Hemingway's own life, moving as it does from sophisticated Thirties Paris to the brutality of the Spanish Civil War and the wide open spaces of Central Africa.
Hemingway's action-man stories with their personal blend of the beefcake and brains were naturals for Hollywood in the last two or three decades. A Farewell to Arms, To Have and Have Not, The Macomber Affair, For Whom the Bell Tolls, The Killers all bore the stamp of Hemingway.
