A conversation between Hugh Sykes Davies , literary critic, and Basil Taylor , art historian and critic who died last July. A feeling for landscape in general, and for the English landscape in particular, developed strongly in the course of the 18th century: but by the early 19th century it was ' nature ' rather than the scenic qualities of the landscape that provided the inspiration.
John Constable was born in 1776. A major exhibition commemorating the bicentenary of his birth is at the Tate Gallery in London until 25 April.
