THE CELESTIAL OMNIBUS

on BBC Home Service Basic

View in Radio Times

Radio play, adapted by Leonard Cottrell from the short story by E. M. Forster. Produced by Leonard Cottrell
Stories of fantasy have always lent themselves well to radio adaptation. E. M. Forster 's short story ' The Celestial Omnibus ' concerns a sensitive and imaginative boy who discovers a mysterious omnibus. This vehicle, which is really a symbol of the human imagination, enables him to escape from his depressing suburban environment and travel to the celestial regions where he fraternises with the Immortals of literature and music. What happens when the boy persuades Mr. Bons, a pretentious intellectual snob, to accompany him on one of these journeys forms a dramatic climax to the play.
