A short story by Katherine Mansfield
Read by Micheline Patton
The fame of Katherine Mansfield -her real name, until she married Middleton Murry in 1913, was Katherine Beauchamp-rests entirely on her short stories. She did plan a novel once, but abandoned it, and her weekly reviews of novels in the Athenceum (reprinted in 1930, seven years after her death) showed that she possessed a fine critical sense. But during her short life of thirty-four years, she put the best of herself into her stories.
Fertile in ideas though she was, she always found it difficult to begin writing. But when the beginning was made, she worked quickly and easily. ' Once I start them they haunt me, pursue me, and plague me until they are finished..... There is no feeling to be compared with the feeling of having written and finished a story.'
